Yesterday’s Martial Arts, as expected, was quite an eye-opening experience. My first BBJ class was extremely enjoyable; other students ranged in ages from 22 to over 60. It’s pretty darned obvious to me that I have a lot to learn! Still, I was considered ‘feisty’ which was a Good Thing for a beginner; I got to “roll” (ie, pin/be pinned while learning how to lock/break free/immobilize) and handled myself rather decently.
And karate, my oh my, I’ll never forget that. While it was great to return to Kendo (4 weeks since I last held a sword!) it was adult sparring that really had me, ahem, taking off. During one of our drills I was against the best fighter in the dojo and demanded of him, hit me! He very kindly obliged me with a front kick to the chest protector, that literally lifted me up and sent me flying backwards onto my rump. The good news is that I landed fine, the better news is that I got up immediately, and the best news is, I didn’t want to quit. 🙂 More more more! Now, if you’ve never been on the receiving end of such a kick, let me tell you…it’s character-building. To the extreme. I have to figure out how to sidestep it in the future; I have no problems demanding the same thing in future classes. This time, though, I’ll be (hopefully) more competent!
Came home to find my kids still awake, reading in my bedroom. Took a hot bath with essential sandalwood/pine oils and discovered that a.) I have a nasty carpet burn on my elbow and b.) I also must have jammed my right thumb during sparring as it is now currently yelling in agony whenever I move it. Ah well, these things happen. I must have spent 10 minutes regaling my kids about my adventures (“Kids! It was glorious! I’ve never been airborne before! Oh wowowowowowowow and your mom Didn’t Give Up!”); they know all the senseis who teach/spar and found my acrobatics lesson most, ahem, amusing. Personally speaking, I am deeply appreciative that my senseis don’t go easy when I ask; it’s a personal challenge of mine that I proactively handle whatever is thrown at me and ask for more.

and spent most of the day in non-blogging work. Today I’ll have to catch up on some megaWriting. I hope my thumb returns to normal as tonight is Kendo sparring complete with armor and kickboxing if I’m still awake.
So starts Wednesday,
