Rayanne wrote a wonderful post over at RecruitingBlogs.com entitled:

The article focuses on recruiting and includes:

…I guess the thing is…, you can win with skill and experience, but will it really matter without "heart?" Without skill and experience, you do not have a shot at winning if you don’t "heart." How many recruiters are left in the game right now that don’t have heart? That don’t love this sport? That aren’t driven by love of making placements or connecting good people? That impetus, the desire to succeed in this industry can be driven by many factors, money being one. Those driven by money have probably struggled quite a bit over the last two years. Those driven by their hearts have probably fared better….MORE…

The article is quite good; I highly recommend you read it!

I’d like to add my take on the quote, however -

You can have all the heart, skills and ability in the world, but if you let your ego get into the way of reality, it’s all for naught.

Meaning, of course:

Always be open to new paths of thought, even if…they cause you to re-examine your own inner strength and qualities.

It might be scary to do, but hey, reality doesn’t care.

But your future success will depend upon it.

Meaning…

Your kindness in your writing can cause others to find their own wings.

And you can take that to the bank.

I thought of this quote this morning when I was visiting Joanna’s superb blog Confident Writing.  The post that inspired it was:

She writes:

I came across this quote on Twitter the other day.

Kindness in words creates confidence. Kindness in thinking creates profoundness. Kindness in giving creates love~LaoTzu

It made me think in a different way about confidence and writing. About how much kindness is an essential part of the mix.

Kindness in words creates confidence in others.

Kindness in words creates confidence in your self….MORE….

Good words!  And I started to think what kindness and writing meant to me….and that’s what I came up with.

Today’s Quote of the Day

Meaning…

You can tell them and you can tell them and you can tell them….

And your kids will still have their moments of stupidity that would make a cycling fish gasp in admiration.

Imagine the surprise that welcomed me after I came up from the basement yesterday to discover my son was trying to open the door for a stranger.

A Comcast stranger, mind you, but a stranger all the same.  His sister prevented him from opening said door (plus, my mooses were doing their very best imitation of "Let’s play the game called Rip Out The Stranger’s Throat!", which was probably a wee bit un-nerving to say the very least).

After dealing with the issue, I grew 392 more gray hairs and had a lovely chat with Honorable Boy 1 about the utter stupidity of his actions. 

And yes, generally I’m ‘way more tactful…but ignoring stranger danger is something about which I will NOT mince words.

It was a stupid, stupid STUPID action.

And hopefully, I communicated that most admirably indeed.

Sigh.  Parenting….it’s a hero’s journey.

Today’s Quote of the Day

Meaning…

You’re never too old to open your mind to new ideas.

Even if your ego is too big to accept that fact.

The truth is, sometimes you’re just too close to the situation.  Plain and simple…your sight is clouded by your own personal involvement.

Getting a third party viewpoint, and giving yourself permission to say,

"Jeepers!  My ideas WERE NOT right for the situation – this is a far better way to approach things!"

Can alleviate big huge bleeping amounts of angst.

Plus it gets you moving far quicker than just plain treading the waters of your own indecision.

Ain’t that the truth, though?

To accept wisdom…you must have the life experiences and strength of spirit to recognize it.

And that doesn’t always happen.

What’s wisdom to me…might be foolish thoughts to you.

Does that make you a fool?

Or does that make you wise because for you….due to your OWN life’s experiences…the wisdom is reduced to mere bizarre thoughts?

And if your take on my wisdom is that I’m the fool, does that preclude you to learning what I have to offer?

Or does what I have to offer have zero value because you have yet to encounter the experience where the insights will be critical?

Sometimes it’s hell being a mom.

Today’s Quote of the Day

"What doesn’t kill you HURTS LIKE HELL."

And you thought I’d say, makes you stronger, right? 

That’s true too…but…the pain thru which you go should truly be honored as well.

Have you ever gone thru a challenging time that sears your soul with angst and agony?  And even though you found yourself stronger for the experience,the scars it left truly never heal?

I’m actually okay with that, mind you.  After all, a body scarred is a body that has seen challenges and opportunities and experiences the majority of the world never endured!  Fact is, one of my favorite scars on my body is the almost-faded one on my right elbow – it resulted from karate sparring when I dared the sensei in question to GO AHEAD, KICK ME!

He did and I went literally flying backwards and embraced a rug burn soooo character-building, I bled for some time afterwards.

But you know something?  I picked myself up right after that and flung myself back into the sparring.   And I’m pretty certain not many 40-something year old women would do that!

The burn healed…but the scar is still there.  And I cherish it. 

Back to hurting like hell!  Yes, I’m all for character-building experiences…but you should also honor the pain you experience as well.  It’s always a hero’s journey and should never be shoved aside.

Sad, isn’t it?

But for the most part, it’s oh so true (especially in business).

Have you ever started a new project or launched a new site or tackled a new challenge, only to discover that your colleagues who promised you help or a review or support just conveniently forgot about that wee fact of life?

It can be very depressing…or it can be a blessing in disguise.

It’s depressing if you’ve actually counted on people to deliver…and can be the kiss of death to your productivity as well.

But, if you take ownership of your own feelings (and realize that besides your family and loved ones):

NOBODY owes you ANYTHING.

you learn to become self-reliant in a blindingly quick amount of time.

It’s very character-building to boot. 

So, when you’re launching something brave and new….be sure you take ownership of all the critical aspects and that your success is NOTdependent upon someone else.

Your income’s fitness will thank you for it.

And let me tell you, that’s MADDENING in the extreme.

But alas, 12+ years of marketing online has shown me beyond any doubt – if people THINK you deliver quality, you could give them complete and total dreck and they’ll rave all the more about it.

You only have to look at some of the big names out there who, because of their Big Boys Network or own massive following, can take what is free to find online, package it with all the bells and whistles, and then charge anywhere from $97 to $1,499 for it.

Get enough people drinking the Koolaid…and the other sheeple will follow.

As a value-based marketer myself, this really frosts my petunias.  But then again, you can scream at the sun "DO NOT RISE!!!" and chances are…it will ignore you too.

So!  What can YOU do?

First off, to ensure you sleep well at night, always DO pride yourself on the quality you and only YOU can deliver.

And make certain that you NEVER apologize for what you know!  Be confident about your offerings and be confident about what you have to teach your customer.

I won’t say, the money will roll in….because if someone ELSE has a bigger network/following/what have you than you, well….it won’t.

But it will truly be a STABLE start.  And from such beginnings, empires can grow.

Got a problem?

Yep, me too.  Lots of them, actually. 

Choosing to ignore it in hopes it goes away?

Well….that was me too, in the past.  Problem was, because I’d never tackle the main cause of what was enabling my problem to engulf my entire thoughts, I’d never cut it off at the roots…and instead, let it flower into a mutant Little Shop of Horrors plant that was painful indeed to eradicate.

Bleck.

Thus, here’s some words of wisdom for today – never ever let the little things fester if their genetic DNA turns them into a homicidal Godzilla upon maturing.  It just ain’t worth the pain.

Words.

They’re cheap.

As in, REALLY cheap.

As in, not worth the air molecules they displace.

Have you ever said to yourself, I’m GOING to get this project on the fast track or I’m GOING to win that next client or I’m going to….

To hell with the "going to’s".

Instead, carve out the time required and just freakin’ DO IT.

Nobody else will do it for you. 

Today, review the projects you have on the front-burners…and determine just what NEEDS to be done.   Commit yourself to completing it (or perhaps just one aspect of it – baby steps are okay!).

And then make it so.

And THEN…..tell me.
