Free!Morning all,

With the economy currently battling Freddy Krueger in regards to which is more frightening, it only makes sense to lessen the financial expenditures one must endure during the next few months.

But an opportunity now arises (for as we all know, problems are simply mis-understood opportunties)!

Halloween is coming…and those cute little costumes you see at Party City or Kmart or what have you will run you between $20 to more than 15 cups of Starbucks coffee!  And when you think it’s only for one day…you have to ask yourself, is there a Read more »

Woefully sighing over closed doors

Closed Doors

Morning!

Oh wow, was yesterday ever so much fun!  I had the pleasure of attending our karate dojo’s demostration and presentation for our local Community Day!  As the unofficial photographer of my dojo, I took bleeploads of pictures and a great many of them turned out magnificent.  I always enjoy printing them out on 8.5×11" paper and handing them to the parents; my photography skills are improving greatly.

But I digress!

The fine art of beating yourself up

Angst!

Morning!

Well, yesterday was quite the interesting character-building time for me.  Actually, for the most part, it was quite enjoyable - got lots of writing done, taught my kids some snappy comebacks to idiot sayings, saw the final printout of the first brochure I’ve ever designed (and I’ll confess - that was sweet)….life was most peachy until my beloved adult sparring.

For there:

In a word, my skills were less optimal than, oh, lessee, a drunk moose playing DDR with his caribou buds.

Bleh.  I’ve haven’t been that incompetent now for over a year; I have no idea to where my mind went during the bout.  And afterwards, I couldn’t even leave (welll, of course I COULD, I chose not to, as the karate demo team was practicing and I always take pictures).  So for the first 10 minutes, I dwelled on how truly lousy Read more »

Honoring your supreme cluelessness

Here clue clue clue clue!

Morning all!

You know, one of my favorite phrases in the entire world is:

Life!  It’s character-building!

And because cluelessness (we’re talking the kind that would win the Darwin Awards if one existed for personal business) is part and parcel of one’s character (ideally, less than, hmmmm, 87% of your total makeup), I now firmly believe that it should be embraced and cherished and LEARNED FROM and then……let go with all of the fervor a Twitterholic embraces the latest version of TweetDeck.

By now, you’re probably aware….I, ahem, enjoyed the above opportunity to a point that made the phrase

Soul-searing agony

seem more appealing than a Read more »

How to destroy relationship abuse

NoAbuseMorning!

Today is Sunday!  A day of rest, unless your last name is Ling!  :)  I have lots on my plate today including writing, revamping my RISE site, challenging the kids in DDR and more.  Hah!  And folks think I have no life…hah!

But I digress.

Today’s thought of the day deals with the dank seamy underbelly of relationships…that of abuse.

Now, I’m not talking merely about Read more »

On being a GREAT lover - Are you your body OR are you your soul?

Great LoverMorning all,

For today’s post, I’d like to focus on a very very very VERY simple concept….yet one that is often overwhelmed by the priority our society places on truly superficial aspects.

And it’s this:

Do you define yourself by your body…or by your soul?

It’s not as inane a question as you might think!  Think about what today’s culture tends to embrace. Read more »

Emasculating the jerks who bother you

Say no to jerks!Morning all,

You know, at the venerable young age of 44, I am constantly reminded of just how terrific it is being in my 40s.  Not only do I currently enjoy superb health (at 125 pounds this morning (which is 52 pounds less than my weight in December of 2006), my stamina, while still slightly less than my senior black belts at the dojo (okay, "slightly" meaning "10 to the 39th power") is superior to when I was in my 20s), but I also have  at my beck and call 4 decades of life experiences.

Honestly, that is something that simply cannot be replaced.

When I was in my 20s, my folks and colleagues who were in their 40s would share with me their wisdom for dealing with jerks and other low-lying scum that inhabited my workplace.  Back then, hah, I figured, sure, what they say might have worked back in the Dark Ages, but I certainly know much better how to tackle Read more »

Embracing your Rebel WITHOUT a Clue

Clue herder to the rescue!Morning all!

My gosh, it’s now 1:42pm and I’m finally (yes finally!) feeling life start to percolate back into my veins.  You see, yesterday I indulged (over-indulged) in my beloved adult karate sparring…and it was amazingly magnificent and spine-tingling and death-defying and quite enjoyable indeed.

Our sensei had us practice blocking drills (I counted three fresh new bruises on my forearm this morning!), blocks-into-strikes (my partner was a woman with a super reverse punch that landed over my chest multiple times; it was quite neat tensing my muscles to deflect some of the force.  Wow, I actually HAVE muscles now!  :)  ) and then the actual sparring itself.

Idjut me…well, I was seized by an insane desire to be completely illegal with three opponents and try to get them into a headlock (all together now - "IDJUT BARBARA!!!").  Given the fact all 3 folks are ‘way taller than myself, this failed more dismally than trying to carry the ocean in a colander, but wow, it was tons of fun to try (imagine yours truly, the teeny tiny pitbull, trying to subdue a saber toothed tiger).  Taekwondo Boy (1st degree black belt who is amazingly fast) was quite unstoppable yesterday; I went thru my usual moment of EEEEEEK! but was able to Read more »

Putting AWAY your childhood with a Crystal Sword

I’m feeling very pensive this moment.

This morning, all the utterly soul-searing agonizing joys of PMS barreled into my unwilling pysche, making me consider various channeling methods including indulging in MMA to the death, using a flame thrower to tidy up my kids’ rooms, evoking world peace by obliterating mankind and other similar gentle pursuits.  Being a mature, zen-like mom of magnificence, however, I opted instead  to start cleaning the basement in preparation for future home improvement.

Life was zooming along most peachy-like UNTIL…..I found my 24" crystal sword I had bought 6 years ago….still in its laquered case and buried underneath my kids’ old baby accoutrements.

Now, I vividly remember when I had bought this.  I was going thru some Read more »
