Excellent Newsletter from Nicky 510

 Morning!

You know, it’s not often that I come across a newsletter that’s so insightful and so funny and so darned useful….but I have say, the free newsletter at Nicky510 is that and more!

Look what I received today (reprinted with permission of course).  Not only is the author a cartoonist with a wickedly funny sense of humor, but has quite the unique take on Shakespeare as well.

And with that, I present:

Crow’s Pic of the Day

What a turkey! In case you haven’t noticed, there’s been a population explosion of turkeys across the US. No longer the wily and elusive game bird that challenged our forebears, these guys are almost as at home around people as mallards.

This guy was one of about a half dozen Toms who were parading around in the middle of the street, trying to impress a couple of dozen hens who, showing far more sense, were grazing on a nearby lawn and pretty much ignoring the testosterone display.

Anyway, for those of you who have wondered if turkeys really look like those cardboard cutouts that pop up in 2nd grade classrooms around Thanksgiving, this picture should answer the question.

Crow’s Quote of the Day

I wasted time, and now time doth waste me.

 William Shakespeare

The line is spoken by Richard II as part of a soliloquy given as he ponders life from within his prison cell. As is often the case with a good quote, there can exist more than one way to deploy it. And that’s what I’m going to do. I’ll write a new play and use this line in it.

In my play, the speaker has lived a long time and is now in pondering upon his life, thinking about all he had wanted to do and lamenting how little he had actually accomplished. Rather than seizing the moment and pushing forward with determination and desire, he had frittered his time away, taking it easy and not stressing himself out.

In this soliloquy time takes on a double meaning. "I wasted time" shows how he failed to use the years wisely, allowing his time to slip away.

"And now time doth waste me" casts time not as an uninvolved metronome of life but as an opponent that attacks and enervates.

The passage of time brings waste to our protagonist, dulling the senses and weakening the body. Having squandered his chances, he can no longer fight back against the debilitating pull of time.

Whoa! Not such a cheery play! But hopefully my theater-goers will leave the theater all charged up to break out of their rut and DO something with their lives.

So.

That’s one sentence.

Just a few thousand more and I can look for an agent.   :)

Enjoy,

Barbara Ling
