Betcha you didn’t know bunk beds could be levitated, eh?
Neither did I! 🙂
It all started when Honorable Sons I and II reminded me, gosh Mom, when will we ever get our bunk beds? Now, I need to pause gently here and state a rather unique characteristic of my elder kids – they like camping out quite a lot.
On the floor.
Of their room.
Which kinda sorta negates the usage of a bed.
So! A few months ago, my kids decided (without mom, of course) that Levitating Their Bunk Beds from One Room to Another would be a Very Good Thing Indeed.
In the evolutionary aspect of things, this is called ‘accelerated grey hair creation’ among parental adults. But I digress. 🙂
It was quite an adventure, I’ll give you this. But here’s where the really cool aspects manifested themselves! My elder kids:
- Sat down
- Drew up a plan
- Wrote it out
- Asked their father for input and tools regarding the validity of the exercise
- Contacted the Town Hall to get the necessary Bunk Bed Levitating permissions
- Secured off the area from stray civilian
- Proceeded to execute the transition with style and grace.
Oh wait, that was my alternate universe family! My kids instead called Mom and said, hey! Let’s do it without any sort of planning whatsoever! Wheeeee!
Oooooo, thought I, an opportunity for character-building-ness! So we did, and let me tell you, it was a great start to Camp Ling!
My husband insisted we take pictures with the camera of the bed prior to dismantling it so we’d have a visual record of how it’s supposed to be put together. Hah! We scoff in that general direction! 🙂 Turns out, the three of us were able to take things apart, heave them into the next room, and reconstruct it from memory…making the younger children swoon with joy (oooo! We have a bunk bed! Awesome!).
Which brings me to the point of this post.
Have you ever decided on a family project?
If so, have you given your kids ownership of the process?
Sure! It will end up taking a lot longer to complete…and there’s a good chance that, oh, hmmm, after your kids discover that levitating something that weights 100+ pounds isn’t feasible, you’ll have to deal with discouragement via style and flair.
But! If you as a parent, persevere, you’ll give your kids an opportunity to feel quite superDeDuper about themselves once the project not only is finally completed…..but completed successfully to boot.
Character Building….let me tell you, it surely was. 🙂
Enjoy,
Barbara Ling
