The fine art of poking fun at yourself – Self-confidence and humor

Jun 18th, 2008 | By Barbara | Category: Insights

How to poke fun at yourselfEver generate a hysterical laugh for people at your own expense?

Believe it or not, it’s one of the easiest ways to make your friends and colleagues smile…and has the extra benefit of showing you’re so self-confident, you don’t mind making fun of yourself in the process.

Take the superbly magnificent photo on this post.  Now, I’m the unofficial dojo photographer for my karate school…and I also participate with my kids as well.  Over the weekend, our karate demo teams (which included our star swordswomen) were performing at our local town holiday celebration.

Besides adult sparring, I also enjoy tackling kendo (Japanese swords) too!  To say I am graced with the style of a master legendary samurai is to say…well…one huge whopper of an, ahem, untruth.  :)    True, I have immense amounts of enthusiasm (as you can see from my post about What Being Kicked Thru The Air Taught Me About Blogging) and am known as the slightly insane karate mom (as I live for taking on black belts who pummel me into the ground)…. but that’s about as far as it goes.  :)

Anywhos, after viewing the above picture, I realized it cried out for a caption…and who better to make fun of than myself?

Thus A Caption Was Born!

I brought the picture in yesterday, and folks loved it!  ‘Matter of fact, I was besieged by requests to caption other pictures as well.

When you show you can handle good-natured fun, you come across as a person who is enjoyable to be around!   You’re not viewed as someone pretentious or stuffed full of their own self-importance – instead, your use of humor lets folk know, you’re approachable and likeable to boot.

Remember:

Self-confidence paired with humor – it’s an unbeatable combination in today’s world.

Make it work for you too!

Enjoy,

Barbara

I couldn’t agree more. Self-deprecating humor, skillfully executed, can make for some of the very best belly laughs!

    Hi Barbara,
Thanks to you I got my first laughter from you before I started my day. Good caption. Your talents seem to extend to more than blogging it seems.
