I never had the problem myself with Godaddy - they were able to retrieve domains for me in the past. But who knows, that might have changed. But I can tell you that NameCheap.com is a better choice than GoDaddy.com when this happens.

At least NameCheap has a link to “reactivate” an expired domain for a period of time, whereas GoDaddy holds it hostage!
