Want to run a free group or mailing list for your blog?

Free newsgroupsMorning!

Here’s a neat, quick and to the point tip for your blogging.  I always advocate that you sign up for an autoresponder if you want to run a newsletter for your blog - it provides an extremely effective method for followup marketing, customer care assistance and much much more.

But what if you don’t to go that route?  You can simply start your own group at Yahoo! or MSN Groups or heck, even Google groups!

Back in 2001 or so, I started my own group for auctions, Barbs Auction Network.  The neat thing about groups is that you can set it so only the moderator can post (effectively running a broadcast mailing list).  True, you cannot do followup marketing (ie, send a message one day, and then three days later, schedule another one to go out), but if you’re looking for a free way to develop a group, it’s certainly one direction in which you can gaze.

Here’s some blog-related Yahoo groups that encourage interactivity:

Starting your own Yahoo group is easy!  Simply visit the Start Yahoo Group page and work your way thru.  I always make certain to add various and sundry enhancements like message footers like my Barbs Auction Network one:

So!  If you run a blog and want to send out a weekly or monthly newsletter, but aren’t yet ready for an autoresponder, you can take advantage of the various group/mailing resources out there and make things happen yesterday.

Remember….every improvement you make on your blog starts with taking that first step….to make it so.  Nothing will happen unless you give yourself permission to succeed!

Enjoy,

Barbara Ling

I use an autoresponder but that is indeed an interesting alternative for starting out. I’ll have to pass it along :)

@Dennis Autoresponders are great! I had helped someone a few days ago who just wanted a broadcast ability, so I figured it would make a great blog post. Enjoy, Barbara

It does make a great post, definitely a good free alternative until they are ready for AR.

I haven’t used it, but it seems like it may be better them some of those garbage "free autoresponders" where your deliverability rate is 5% if you’re lucky lol.

As you rightly say, starting your own group is a simple way to get started. Two questions:

    1. How long did you run your groups for before taking the plunge to an autoresponder?

    2. At what size list would you recommend making the change from groups to autoresponders?

    @nick

I started off with an autoresponder, actually.  :)  I’m a marketer at heart, so I wanted to the ability for the 7 day followups etc.

But for broadcasting….heck, Barbs Auction Network is now 5 years a Yahoo Group.  It all depends upon your focus.  It’s not the size that determines whether you use an autoresponder or not - it’s your ultimate goal.

That being said, I’d definitely consider an autoresponder after 100 signups.

    Hope that helps, Barbara
