Back then, it was an innocent exclamation of happiness. 

Today, it can literally be the matter of life and death. 

“Likes” can, that is. 

Studies have shown that social media can cause massive depression if one doesn’t receive “enough” validation via people ‘liking’ their posts.

Shares to indicate how well your audience trusts your content (if they didn’t believe it, they wouldn’t tell their followers about it). 

Traffic to your website from your social activity (use custom URLs for tracking purposes and/or look at social traffic in your web analytics). 

Can you imagine telling your teens this? 

“Children, don’t focus on likes, focus on different metrics like engagement!” 

Well, to be honest, I sure can… it’s going to be a family discussion today. 

But moving this back into the realm of today’s marketing, it offers a great opportunity for a quick cheatsheet: 

Step 1.) Internalize that Instagram is almost ALWAYS about Highlight Reels 

Step 2.) Proactively Encourage Engagement from your Posts On Instagram 

Step 3.) Start including Mental Health Besides Likes In Your Photos (showing your fanbase that you’re aware of mental health resources is always a Good Thing, no matter the niche!)

This past week has been quite the character-building week for a number of reasons.

Here be the most important most important:

As well as colleagues, I count these people as my friends:

Arun Chandran Andie Brocklehurst Tiffany Rae Lambert Liz Tomey Judy Kettenhofen Paul Myers Dave Mendoza Tania Shipman Vanessa Blais Omar Martin Doc Shar and more.

Now, I have bunches of other colleagues too that number in the several zillion, but its been *these* particular folks that have been directly responsible for the most character-building growth I’ve had in several centuries.

I might not agree with some of them. Those with whom I disagree – well, they’ve made me re-examine some of my beliefs. I don’t see my beliefs changing in the future BUT…

The fact I was able to put myself in their figurative shoes and see things from their point of view…

It was hugely enlightening.

Peoples, our time on this planet is relatively a blink of the eye.

Do NOT get yourselves riled up to the point that you take ownership of what others believe, clutch it to your chest, shriek to the winds that you shall transmute these ideas into undying agony and strife….

… and make it your sworn duty to *change* people from without.

Because as you see:

And thank you all who have helped me me see things in views I normally do not consider.

Y’all shine!”

It took awhile, mind you, because most of the folks above have views ‘way different than mine.

However, their comments gave me ‘way more of an indication on how they think…

… and I found them to be very valuable indeed.

One doesn’t have to agree with each other to be respectful to each other.

But first:

Ever hear the phrase – “What you don’t know can’t hurt you?” 

Truly there are times that is applicable. 

For example, if you’re an Internet marketer, NOT knowing that exiting your starship while in orbit around Boreth, minus any extra breathing gear, *will* 100% kill you … 

… that lack of knowledge won’t hurt you in the least (Unless you’re a devout follower of canon from the 1960s and make this dramatic statement in virtually *any* gatekeeping Star Trek group for matters not critical to this essay. But I digress). 

But what if you don’t know something that could *help* you? 

And what if that knowledge could be gained as easily as reading a blog post? 

And even more interesting… 

… what if that knowledge opened the wings of your mind regarding a rather popular social media resource, one that has over a billion zillion trillion (okay, 1+ billion) users? 

I’m talking, of course, about Facebook, and in this particular case, the spine-tingling excitement of reaching potential customers via Facebook ads via (drumrolll please!) 

“Said Aforementioned Well Aged Secret Sauce!” 

I was reminded of this an hour or so ago, when one of my kids started chatting with me about Minecraft. FB, knowing what every living animated cell in this universe does (generally 3 seconds before said cells do it), immediatly showed me an ad about ID Tech Camp that featured (you guessed it) Minecraft! 

Not missing a millisecond, I immediately fired up Hypersnap to grab a screenshot, only to discover that yet again, my computer’s beloved G drive gave up the ghost for the 3512th time since this morning (very slight exaggeration). 

Not missing a Barry Manilow beat, I then pounced on Google to search it up and encountered:

written by our very own Ben Adkins. 

Now, this rather excellent analysis mentioned some key facts in the video entitled: 

“How ID Tech Uses Minecraft to Attract Tech Savvy Kids for Summer Camp” 

The point I really zeroed in on was: 

“How targeting a wide age range can work in certain cases” 

Their explanation makes a huge amount of sense as well: 

“…One thing that really stood out to us is the fact that the age range went up to 60. Then we realized that they were targeting grandparents of these tech-savvy kids. Grandparents are on Facebook and always looking for ways to spoil their grandchildren or tell their children what they need to be buying for their grandchildren. 

We believe this is more of an exploratory ad to see what kind of people are actually clicking on their stuff. But, what you are not seeing in this targeting, is that they are targeting people who have kids. The reason you are not going to see this show up is because this is something that is highly sensitive for parents. There are certain targeting things that will never show up. And most of the time, what we have learned, is that Facebook doesn’t put it in front of you because it would raise some things that may be a problem for them….” 

(‘course, in *my* family, grandparents are defined by ages 80+, but as I’ve been assured *many* times… my family (and me, for that matter) is not quite the usual. Smile ) 

’tis a grand article all in all – I highly suggest you check it out! 

FB ads, it seems, tends to be quite the interesting opportunity for marketers… and as such, would lend itself to a one-problem/one solution report or cheatsheet like so: 

Step 1.) Understand the Benefits of FB Ads 

Step 2.) Get Inspired by FB Ad Examples and explanations 

Step 3.) Give Yourself Permission to Try Via These Beginners Steps

It’s Thursday and my wrongness continues!

I spent ‘way too much time dwelling on it because OH YES!

That’s what happened.

Yesterday I was in my office (which is next to the deck) and the husband needed me.

Unfortunately, I’ve programmed myself to speed over whenever my name is called by a family member…

And let me tell you.

That is HIGHLY unwise if you have a fused ankle!

So for most of  yesterday I was on bedrest:

Behold the lump on my left ankle.

Yep… yesterday was NOT fun.

And then I realized my take on “blaming others:” like so:

“…The smartest thing you can do after you realize you’ve been taken for a fool is to:

a.) Give yourself the time required, not to mourn, which is generally my words of advice, but figuratively beat yourself up that you were *that dumb* in the first place to fall for it

b.) Take ownership of your actions that while they were meant for the best of intentions, were used for the worst of purposes (and then proceed directly BACK to step a.) for as long as required

c.) Pass along that which you have learned to your family and friends

d.) And THEN let it go. Never forget it, mind you, so you will not be tempted to be an idjut again in the future,…”
