Yesterday was fascinating indeed.
Let’s see… first off, one of my Honorary Lings (those are kids that basically view me as a surrogate parent figure) is off now and teaching English abroad! Isn’t that grand to hear?
And another Honorary Ling is learning that she is more than equal to the challenges facing her. It’s tough, sometimes, walking thru the fire… but I have no doubt she will emerge grand and stronger for it all.
Funny how life sometimes throws challenges at you that you’d never think you could survive…
… until you do, and then, well.

Well, actually, no, it’s still Friday. Probably around 9:30pm.
But…. tomorrow is (wait for it) Large Item Dropoff day… and chances are, the morning will be spent gently, ahem, removing the several million tons of wood (rather mouldy wood) from my moosemobile.

Yesterday was a 2 doctor visit (again, wheeee!) and all around taking care of the family.
But! Look what one of our group members wrote:

Hmmm, too easy.
How ’bout….
Ever have an unpopular opinion?
If so, how do you best go about sharing said opinions?
Over the past few weeks, I’ve experienced several delightful interactions where people have tried to “show me the errors of my ways” by insisting with the force of 10000 aggravated de-tesseracted Lokis that I should consider myself blessed….
… blessed by the fact my ignorance could be divinely washed away via the profoundly mono-toned discussions of those who “knew the truth.”
It’s not often that my ears will shut down faster than the Kingly Moose scarfs down a sirloin steak (or Costco chicken, or my salad, or choice concrete blocks, or ….)….
But one way *guaranteed* to lose me as an audience is to imply one truth *fits all*.
So stupid that attitude is. I remember once, long long ago, back when ChickenMan, that White Winged Warrior, was the number one radio show… I was told that if a boy hit you, it meant “he likes you!”
I remember my response was basically “ahem, gnope, do not pass go, do not collect $200, that be bullshit of the smelliest variety.”
I soon discovered my opinion was considered flat-out wrong and somehow I was at fault for not appreciating the daily kicking of my desk (such a sign of affection! This was 1974, btw).
Sigh.
Which brings me up to today.
If you feel some opinion is more jerkified than fossilized clams claming the earth is flat, there are ways to get your ideas across without shutting down your intended audience.
It’s definitely a required skill these days (especially if you’re dealing with corporate politics, tweebleheads on FB, people who simply get not only your goat but your entire Dancing Goat Herd (complete with coffee!)).
So what to do you come across opinions you feel are less relevant than fermented moose by-products?
For me, generally… I figure there is zero to be gained in debating the issue. We all have the right to our opinions, and we all will never ever ever agree 100% (or 90% or 76% or 45% or 22% or ….)
Save your energy for people who truly *deserve* your input. I doubt that *anyone* has been changed by reading flamewars on any platform…
… but what if you offer instead resources to back your ideas and then say, this is what I think, here’s why I think it – feel free to check it out and perhaps later, let me know what you think?
What then?
This gives the readers opportunities to do their own investigations, if so inspired. And it’s only from within *them*… that possibly their ideas will change.
You can possess the most compelling “truths” for *you*. But if you want to change other people’s hearts and minds….
Choose the path of common sense.
Don’t alienate.
Instead, educate in such a way that your audience wants to learn *more*.
G’head, try it. You might be surprised at the benefits you’ll receive.
