Did you know?

Federal regulations require that issuers of debit cards set a maximum liability of $50 if the card is reported stolen or lost within two days of discovery. Your liability can increase to $500 if you report that the card is stolen or lost within sixty days. If you fail to report that your card is stolen or lost within sixty days, you may lose all funds stolen by the thief, including any overdrafts on your bank account.

Some states (Iowa, Kansas, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Mexico and Wisconsin) have capped the liability for unauthorized withdrawals using an ATM or debit card at $50. In addition, some debit card issuers offer their customers more protection than the federal regulations provide, so check with your financial institution regarding liability.
