Various
Vocational Vectors
Good morning! I apologize for the lateness
of this ezine - my children had fulfilled their
duty as pre-schoolers by bringing home from
the school the virus that just would not
disappear. And like always, said virus
immediately decided that mommy was a much
more enjoyable habitat than the kiddies. Today
is the first day I've regained a sense of
normalacy.
I'm pretty sure you're aware of all the facets
available for collegiate recruiting. On-campus
interviews, student organizations, faculty who
knows who the best students are, secretaries who
run unofficial job mailing lists, student chapters
of professional organizations, and the like.
Have you also considered the possibility of
vocational schools or other 2 year colleges
as well? Like every other senior, these graduates
have a need for employment as well. And, depending
upon how you network, you can pick the cream of the
crop at the end of their school year.
First, let's talk about how one uncovers these
resources. The RWM Vocational School database at
http://www.rwm.org/rwm/ will allow
you to query
by state and then vocation - for example, NJ trade
schools are located at http://www.rwm.org/rwm/tf_newj.html
.
And http://www.overview.com/colleges/
will let you
narrow down to accredited colleges, 2 year, 4 year
or others.
Of course, we couldn't forget one of the most useful
resources for researching, Yahoo!'s category at
http://dir.yahoo.com/Business_and_Economy/Business_to_Business/Training_and_Development/Career_Specific/
. This category provides leads
to schools in extremely niche trades that one might not
consider at first, such as Pronet for Remote Sensing
and GIS, Customer Service, Aviation and over a hundred
more.
Now that we have some ideas of what schools we'd like
to target, what now? Well, of course, the first thing
to do would be to network. Contact the Career Advisor
of the vocational school, and offer to provide a 1
hour seminar on 'Maxing Out Your Salary Upon Graduation'
(or some other equally riveting topic). In other words,
make yourself stand out - showcase just why you're the
recruiter or company to whom they want to give the
red carpet service. You might be astounded at some
of the gems you'll uncover. Thankyouverymuch!
