Internet Marketing for Your Mom (what YOU need to know!)

Wisdom

I just read the most excellent article

Internet Marketing for Smart People

and while I truly agree that folks who read Copyblogger are generally quite smart, I think they’re missing the ball on one crucial aspect.

"Smart" is NOT what defines folks who make a success online.  I’ve met many brilliant people who are still pulling in less than minimum wage (but still delight in ‘faking it until they break it’).

No, instead, when I think about people who make their living online, I think about my mom (who is in her 80s).

Not because my mom is an Internet guru, far from it (she’s from the school of "computers make nice doorstops, dear.").

No sirree…it’s because she’s *wise*.

Oh, she’s smart too (we’re talking PhD knowledge of history)…but it’s the wisdom aspect in which she really rocks!

And THAT’S what I think truly separates people who are successful online – they’re wise, they’re astute, they’re insightful.

In other words, they know HOW to learn…and HOW to apply that knowledge to boot!

So let me now bring this topic back to the most important person in the world reading about it…YOU!

Are YOU wise enough to learn how to make money online?

Hmmmm?

I’ll tell you right now!

You’re wise enough to learn how to make money online IF (and only IF):

  • You can let go of your ego and open your mind to ideas
  • You are confident enough to push back if you encounter techniques that do NOT work for you
  • You choose to shun fear regarding learning something new….and view failures as critical stepping stones to success.

Profound, ain’t that?  But it’s really true.   Nobody but nobody (except my mom, of course) knows everything…but EVERYONE knows SOMETHING.  Put all of those "somethings" together….and you’ll have a tremendous power with which to reckon!

But that power will be USELESS…unless you can let go of your ego and admit you don’t know everything that’s required to be successful online.

And yes, that was one big long hard painful lesson that took me years back in 2001 or so to realize!

Learning new things, however, can be fraught with peril…if the person teaching, however, is more clueless than a porcupine in a hot air balloon factory.

So….it’s up to you to recognize the warning signs when so-called gurus start "talking the talk" without ever "walking the walk."

(this is one reason why I love reading the articles at CopyBlogger – the quality of information shared there cannot be disputed).

But then….another issue can rear its head!

Let’s say that you DO find a superb course or teacher or guru or what have you…and your task is to attempt something you’ve NEVER EVER EVER done before.

  • It could be you have to start your own blog.
  • It could be that you have to begin article marketing in earnest.
  • It could be that you need to build a list!

In other words….you might have to CHOOSE to force yourself OUTSIDE of your comfort boundaries in order to grasp future success.

And believe you me…that can be scary beyond belief.

So…the next time you want to achieve success online, think of your mom (or heck, think of mine!)…and ask yourself:

Do I possess the wisdom to make it happen?

The answer….she might surprise you.  But it’s a hero’s journey we all must take.

Enjoy,

Barbara Ling

If people would just jump in with both feet and be totally committed, they can’t really go wrong. Trying to make money online will be a great learning experience, one that requires hard work and dedication.

It’s true that almost anyone COULD do it; it’s just that not everyone WOULD do it.

Great post, you are correct it does take “wisdom” to make it in this business. Also I find it takes patience, something I had to learn. But if you are willing to listen to those who know what to do, then it’s a matter of time.

Excellent points. We all need to get out of our comfort zones if we even want a glipse of success.

    Thanks!

Wow! powerful words Barbara and I think too many would be “get rich by faking it until you make it” types fail to realize, or talk about, that its hard work and constant effort, sprinkled with some smarts and savvy that makes it all happen.

I feel you can have anything that you want in life if:
    A – you have a goal
    B – you have a plan
C – you pay the price required in effort, time or resources

You said it well and thanks for the reminder.
