Make money with the eBay Affiliate Program – Part 1 – Unlearn What You Have Learned

Make money with the eBay Affiliate ProgramMorning!

The sun is shining (okay, blatant lie, it’s cloudy and about to storm), the birdies are mooing (somewhat more true; they’re tweeting up a storm), the cows are tweeting (Cows?  In the city?) and it’s time to cry to the universe:

Oh Universe, why must I leave my chair to brew coffee?  Why can’t coffee spontaneously appear in my cup?

Such are the questions that have confounded mankind since the dawn of rollerblades.

But I digress.  :)

Let’s talk money!

No, let’s talk about making money!

No, let’s talk about making money with the (insert dramatic drumroll here!) eBay affiliate program!

As you’re probably aware if you’ve scanned my sidebar, I live for the eBay affiliate program!  Well, okay, that’s a bit of an exaggeration – I really live for my family, my friends, my morning coffee in between which nobody gets if they value their lives.  But the point remains!

The eBay affiliate program allows you to monetize virtually ANY niche imaginable.  For example, my metablogging site Ask Owlbert follows a Macgyver theme.   You tell me now…from where ELSE could I get Macgyver items from which I could generate great commissions?

Hmmm?

I’ve used the eBay Affiliate Program to monetize sites dealing with:

  • Kitchens
  • Construction
  • Power tools
  • Nascar
  • Bacteria textbooks
  • Math software
  • Beads
  • Feathers
  • RVs
  • Volvos

You name it, I’ve probably built it.  Hence this series!

The FIRST thing you have to do to make money with the eBay affiliate program is (and I quote from Yoga)

Unlearn….what you have learned!

It’s not like Adsense where you fling in the code and hope someone clicks.  Heck no!

The eBay Affiliate Program lets you add targeted niche items to your individual posts as well.  For example, let’s say that instead of making money with the eBay Affiliate Program , this post centered instead upon collecting Albert Payson Terhune books.   I could close it with

ps – and speaking about Albert Payson Terhune, have you read:

What if this post centered instead on how a Venus Fly Trap tried eating one of my TwitterBudgies?

How about:

ps – Other plants that go "chomp!" include:

Or what if I had just finished blogging about a quick reference guide to p90x and strength training?  I could add:

ps – Thinking about buying P90x at a discount?  Lookie here!

See how it works?

The eBay Affiliate Program lets you monetize your post, (no matter what it’s about!)  with targeted items upon which your readers almost certainly will click.

So!  Unlearn what you have learned – don’t be content with just slapping in affiliate code and going along your merry way.  Target your affiliate audience even finer by delivering precisely-focused visual graphics of goodies in which they can indulge via an impulse buy – it should drive your eBay affiliate commission up ever higher and higher.

Hope you liked this article – you’ll adore Part II!  Be sure you subscribe to my feed  so you don’t miss it when it’s revealed.

Enjoy,

Barbara

I really like the eBay program as well. I have not used the phpBay plugin very often for WordPress, but I havre started to use it occasionally. Have you tried the Build a Niche product? Still not convinced it works very well but I would be interested to hear your thoughts.

    Hi LGR,

I roll my own eBay stuff as well as use the eBay creatives, but have recently started researching the various/sundry plugins that are out there. I’ll be certain to post my findings when they are ready!

I wonder how Build a Niche and others are dealing with the changeover from Commission Junction? I’m having nightmares about that (so many sites, so many pages, so many postings to update)….

    Thanks for visiting!

    Hi

Just found you through the blogging pack (Chris Garrett)

Nice piece on e-bay. I’ve got a couple of sites that I might be going with and e-bay might be something that I can use.

In this post, did you manually add the listing or did you use something from e-bay?

also, noticed the welcome section when I arrived – is this achieved with a wp plugin?

    Thanks again

    Hi BW,

    Thanks for visiting!
I used the Editor Kit from eBay.

And the welcome was achieved via the What Would Seth Godin Do plugin – I blogged about that at http://tinyurl.com/3nyrtl .

    Hope that helps,

Like you say Barbara ebay is the way to monetize “hard to monetize” sites.

    All the best,

Great information. I’m about to go get some eBay links and post them on my site.

Since I don’t know how to write PHP code, I really don’t know where to post the code.

Do you get the code from eBay and just post the code within the post area? Or do you place them within the actual php file?

Thanks again for the insight and help. I really enjoyed looking at your other posts.

It depends – you can switch to ’source’ or ‘html’ view and post it there, or post it within the sidebar.php code.

    Hope that helps!
