You know, there's a couple of things I really don't like in the Internet marketing arena.
Lies, for one.
And scummy marketing techniques, for two.
Like what I just received. To wit:
To: me
From: Scummy marketer
Re: Re: Work Available In Davenport – Needed Today!
This is a RARE opportunity…
Scummy link deleted
A ClickBank affiliate – who has made over
$1.8 Mill from just ONE account in the
last year is recruiting. If you have a few spare hours a week
and you want an exclusive license to use
his set-and-forget software…which he uses
to make a REAL income of up to $1,425 a day…
Wanna see what greeted me when I checked out the link?
Now, in all honesty, the rather insufficiently-clad breasts don't bother me (after all, sex does sell in marketing).
What really frosted my petunias was the geo-targeting marketing that ended up having nothing to do with, well, my town *or* location.
A town close by my own was referred in the email subject, see.
Which makes me wonder.
How could that information have been gleaned?
Especially….as I had not visited the marketer-in-questions' site in over 2 years?
Plus, this is the second geo-targeted email I've received in the last 24 hours, thus indicating that my geo info is now somewhere on a list….associated with my email address.
This does not make Barbara a happy camper, whatsoever!!
The page in question also required 4 opt-outs to finally escape its clutches to boot.
Sigh.
Geomarketing certainly does have its place in Internet marketing, even generic geo-targeting. But somehow, the above just left me feeling a wee bit queasy.
How 'bout you?
Grow strong,
Barbara Ling
