Where was I?
Ah yes, Sunday!
It’s now 5 years since Hurricane Sandy smooshed the Jersey Shore. We lost power for 10 days. I remember it vividly – the hurricane struck at night, so we couldn’t see things happening but wow the next day – sheer utter devastation.
‘course, a week after that, I was in working at the local Starbucks and wrote “Easy Frankenstorm Profits”. Made some good cash from that (and what’s funny is the week BEFORE Sandy, I had my ankle fused, so I was in a cast as well).
Ah, memories!
And snails!
Yesterday the husband and I went to the gym, and then for dimsum afterwards which resulted in…
Snails in black bean sauce!
Yum!
In addition, some folks I know are going thru some difficult times of their own making. So I wrote:
“Sometimes we need to grow.
And sometimes that growth is forced upon us.
I remember ‘way ‘way back, around when William Shakespeare gave his plays in realtime…
… my group of friends shut me out (I was 18 back then… and ‘way more immature than my peers).
At that time, I could NOT look beyond what others saw…
… which were my actions were misinterpreted in ways I never considered.
Being kids back then, my friends chose to exclude me… and you know what the only thing was that fixed the situation?
Swallowing my pride and asking, what did I do wrong?
Boy that was tough. But I managed to do so.
To be honest, I don’t remember the aftermath save it was positive. But nothing after that.
Your takeway?
Everyone has failed mind-reading 101. And even now, at my centuries old age of over 50, I still miscommunicate (as does my husband).
And you know what fixes that?
Open communication of taking ownership of what I said… and the unintended results.
I cannot control how others react to my speech. BUT if there IS a miscommunication, I *can* show regret my words were received incorrectly.
The husband and I both massively screwed that up ourselves yesterday, as a matter of fact. What saved the day for both of us was to (after letting the hurt dissipate), validate the other’s impression, reinterate we didn’t mean that at all, and also count on what we truly know of each other – we are each other’s rock and strength and security… and would *never* intend to be malicious or hurtful to the other.
And honestly, it took several hours to remember that part. The emotional fire that flares up when you feel self-rightous and that everyone else is WRONG… that does take a few hours to die down.
Your takeaway?
All of us… we’re only human.
And we’re bound to mess up with friendship issues.
The key is to internalize to the data *behind* the relationship.
If past data points have *shown* an overwhelming amount of goodness and love and friendship and all that jazz….
… you really do NOT want to jeopardize that by letting misunderstandings ruin it.
Pride is a very lonely companion at night.
So, if you’re going through a rough communication patch with your friends or family…
… take the time out to realize that perhaps it’s not them.
It’s also *you*.
And *you* can fix that aspect by swallowing any ego and honestly asking, Ok … I might have done something wrong in the past or something that came across bad…. can you tell me what it was?
And then see if you can view the response *without* having to defend yourself and simply validating what is shared.
From such courageous actions… friendships can be recovered.

Ah yes, Saturday!
Had to rescue the husband, I had.
He had gone shopping at Costco and when he went to start his car, said car said, can’t find the key!
In other words the battery in his car key died. 🙁
Luckily I answered his call – he forgot his cell phone and an unknown number popped up. I normally NEVER answer such calls but for some reason….
… decided to do so this time.
Happy I did!
We ended up driving to first one Walgreens, then a dollar store, then Staples, then Shoprite, then Best Buy, and then another Walgreens which finally DID have the required battery. Yay!
What an evening.
Prior to that, the day went well…. getting more goodies ready.

I slept late!
My gosh, what a day was yesterday. Truly.
Had an epidural for pain… and so far, it seems to be doing well. But wow, sitting with neck down so I can get needles in the neck… character-building indeed.
After that, we had a counseling session for one of our kids… very intense. VERY intense. Good, mind you, but wow…
Parenting is truly a hero’s journey indeed.
And you know… it will be 2018 soon….
