21 Days to a More Profitable Blog Tutorial > Day 20! Engage your audience with a craved tutorial
(HiyeeHo everyone, it’s 8:13am but don’t worry - I was up at 3am as well!)
Welcome back! So glad you could visit again to check out Day 20 of my 21 Day tutoria!
How was your day yesterday? Mine was rather enjoyable - I set up a romantic date with the husband, wrote about some, ahem, unique Insane Luxury, mused when local tragedy strikes, bloggers can do their part, and all in all, had a very relaxing day with the family.
This morning, I commented at Read The Blogs of The Companies That Make You Money, and now….now it’s time for!
Today is Day 20 of my series, 21 Days To A More Profitable Blog!
And for today, I’d like to discuss:
American Idol
You’ve heard of it, I assume?
Would you believe, I’m one of those few fossilized clams who has never seen it on TV? Then again, I never watched The Apprentice or Big Brother or Survivor or "Survive The Classroom of Hell" (that reality series deals with substitute teachers for classes of Emo wannabees like the following:
But I digress.
Anywhos, can you tell me the one defining characteristic the above reality shows have?
‘course you can!
It’s that they tell a story.
Right?
People catch an episode, get hooked, and find themselves yearning for next day to arrive to see how the previous day’s cliffhanger was resolved. Thus, the audience grows and grows and then snowballs as forums are created solely to discuss the show and and and ….
You get the idea, right?
Well now! How can you apply that "Story" concept to your blog?
’tis easy - you do what I’ve been doing these past 20 days. You write a tutorial!
And here’s how.
Before You Begin - What skillset of yours can you break down into 3 days or 5 days or 7 days or…?
I first want to give a hat tip to Darren Rowse of Problogger.net - it was his brilliant article about writing tutorials that started me on my merry way. Back in March, Iwrote a 5 days series entitled "Viva The Broccoli Bunny!"
(it’s all about managing your blog reader’s expectations; I wrote it when kids were clamoring for the Easter Bunny and thought, gee, wouldn’t it be funny if his distant cousin, the Broccoli Bunny (who happily flings fresh broccoli at deserving boys and girls) were to visit instead)?
Oh wow look, I digressed again.
So! Tell me now…what knowledge do you possess that you can break into 3 days or 5 days or a week or 2 weeks or what have you? See, once you start a tutorial…people will naturally want to visit every day to see the next installment (just like a do it yourself reality show!).
Once you have that idea down, move to:
Step 1 - On a blank notepad file, write down the 7 or 14 or 21 days and then write each topic next to them.
This will help guide you when you write each day of your tutorial.
Here’s what my 21 Days Tutorial outline looked like:

21). SECRET!
Next,
Step 2 - Start writing your tutorial day by day.
I’ve found the following techniques have helped my tutorials greatly:
- Use 3 steps. Each lesson of mine has 3 key steps. Simplicity is very good when writing a generic tutorial.
- Include a direct link to the first day on every lesson. This makes it easy for people to navigate around.
- Make sure to add homework at the end of each lesson. You’ll receive email inquires about that.
- Write as only YOU can! Don’t imitate others - this is YOUR chance to shine.
That last point is really important:
Remember, you want to blaze your own trail and not tag after everyone else.
Oh yes, and more important thing - it doesn’t MATTER if your topic has been written about before by others. Let’s be serious - how many other people have written tutorials about making money with your blog? Here are some I’ve found today:
I’m sure there’s more…but I have to take my kids to the karate demo practice in 5 minutes and will fill them in later. (NOTE - if you know of a tutorial for making money with a blog, comment about it below!)
And finally,
Step 3 - Announce your tutorial on Twitter and start commenting
Remember yesterday’s lesson about commenting on related blogs? Guess what! After you’ve published each lesson, a direct link to that article will be generated at every site that uses CommentLuv when you comment intelligently.
End result? Your tutorial gets out to the targeted audience quickly, effectively and quite happily as well!
Nice, eh?
In closing
In today’s lesson, you learned about writing tutorials for your blog
And of course (you really didn’t think I’d close a post without this now, did you?) an opportunity now arises!
What do you do with your tutorial once you’re done….that will continue to help you grow your profits year after year?
HOMEWORK - Tell me now….are you a publisher for Clickbank or eJunkie?
Hmmmm? ![]()
Thus, until tomorrow! (and don’t forget, if you think any of your friends would benefit from these tutorials, please do share them! They’ll thank you for it…guaranteed).
Enjoy,
Barbara Ling
