Insight - Taking Care of Yourself
A person
in perfect physical health can die tomorrow. We've all heard of runners
and devout exercisers dying unexpectedly of heart attacks.
And because
the body houses the mind, a person in perfect mental health can die as
well, if the body sickens past the point of supporting life.
Your
health is more than just your body! Think of the last time you were really
stressed (I mean *really* stressed - pulled tighter than a violin string
during a major symphony, or a fishing line when battling a great white
shark). Now, did you react in any way that affected your body (and so your
health)? Perhaps you overindulged in alcohol. Maybe two pounds of Hersey's
chocolates mysteriously disappeared near your fingertips. It could be that
you started to smoke again.
Think
about it. Your state of mind caused you to put your body through heck and
back.
When
you're unbalanced, either physically, emotionally, or spiritually, you
start to willingly cause troubles within your own life. It could be
minor (waking up with a hangover), it could be major (waking up in the
hospital after a failed suicide attempt). Recognizing and dealing with
these issues is key towards keeping your health in top-noptch order.
When
I was 6 months pregnant, I was seized by a desire to reinvent my business
(a decrease in orders will do that). So I spent a week or so pulling 18
hour days (doing most of my work at night so as to be able to spend time
with my kids during the day). The end result? New products that were finished...and
one expectant mother who was completely wiped out. Idiot, thy name was
truly Ling.
I've
since learned that incredibly, time goes by and these things will pass!
When balanced against the health of my growing baby, putting myself at
risk for a few extra product sales was, well, ridiculous.
Think
about yourself now. Do you run yourself ragged, either physically, emotionally
or spiritually? Does any member of your family or your friends do this?
It certainly would be great to snap out of it, wouldn't it.
I think
one of the greatest components of health is being able to recognize when
you're straying from its path. In the heat of the moment (be it a burst
of energy for completing projects, facing your manager as you realize you've
been stabbed in the back, dealing with the Parents/Teachers Association
as they explain why a student who beat up another should not be punished
because, after all, kids will be kids) you are seized by an almost uncontrollable
desire to do something. Anything. Well, okay, not anything, but
an action appropriate to the moment. Right at that second, you might be
taking the first step that snowballs into a really bad situation! That
situation might not occur now, it might not happen in a month...but as
sure as you are breathing right now, it will happen some time.
Proactively
destroying that is a good thing.
