Insight - Achieving Balance
Ever
wake up and feel that you'd have a far better career as a tightrope walker
instead of your usual day job?
With
the economy as crushingly depressived as it is, achieving a healthy balance
in your life can be more difficult than juggling 2 dozen eggs, blindfolded,
and expect not a single crack to ensue.
Work!
Kids! Significant other! Family! Corporate politics! Parents! Cousins!
Money! Retaining money! Taking chances! Protecting your own!
Maintaining
your sanity. Not to mention your balance.
When
you're out of balance, you feel lousy. It really is true that
nobody ever whimpered on their death bed, oh, if only I had put in 17 hours
a day at the office instead of 15!
Still,
though, those are merely words. It can be almost impossible to, say, drag
yourself away from the office if you feel that added hours increase your
job security (which in turn increases your personal emotional security
about taking care of your family). I certainly should know - I thought
if I put in 15 hour workdays for 2 years, I'll be able to retire gracefully
and be superMommy for all ages.
That
was, what, 5 years ago? And I'm still working. Sometimes ridiculous hours
(but I'm getting better at making those hours occur in the weee hours of
the night). I've grown enough, however, to understand that working smarter
might mean working more efficiently (and hence less hours).
My womanhood
isn't defined by the size of my paycheck - it's defined by the impact I
make on my family and friends...the people whom I love. And by internalizing
that, and several other truths, I find myself more often in balance than
not. The Inner Personal Edge goes into
this in detail.
