Insight - Are You Being Right or Righteous?
Ever
just know in your heart that you are right about something? I mean that
there's simply no question - you have the right answer and by gosh, you're
going to tell your Significant Other/spouse/friends/family/colleagues/etc
in no uncertain terms how right you are?
Ever
then try to pull out your hair because those people simply do not see the
light the right way?
It can
be more frustrating than watching your friend on Jeoprady miss the $25,000
bonus question when you're screaming at the TV the correct "what is"
question.
Just
because something is true for you, doesn't make it true for everyone else.
That point was brought home to me with more force than Godzilla snacking
on Toyko earlier this year...an inspirational lady, Nancy
Weaver of Nancy's Parrot Sanctuary, was diagnosed with terminal cancer;
I visited her every week during the last month of her life. I believe in
the healing power of touch and music, and tried teaching it to people who
were close, to no avail. '
That
evening, I was ranting to my husband that they simply didn't see the light.
And my husband said to me, you're now preaching like an evangelist. Just
because you see something is true for yourself, it doesn't mean it holds
the same value to the rest of the world.
Talk
about having a cold bucket of water dumped on me.
As usual,
my soulmate husband hit the target. For
me, I was being right...but for the rest of the world, I was merely being
righteous.
During
discussions with your family or friends, you might actually be right in
a particular issue. Right for yourself, that is. It could be, too, that
the person to whom you speak can end up understanding and agreeing with
you...but that depends almost 100% on the way you discuss it. Do
you talk so your words go in one ear and careen out the other? Or are your
conversations so loving that your words are actually heard?
It's
something to think about.
The
Inner Personal Edge outlines for you steps helpful for getting your
point across in an effective, win-win fashion. Additionally, you can use
one of the dozen Inner Coupons (tm)
contained to facilitate opening the discussions if the words just get in
the way.
